Questions & Answers for Stool Eating Preventative

Question
Stool Eating Preventative tabs
I have started my dog on the Stool Eating Preventative tabs and I see some improvement in his behavior. I am following the tabs' instruction as well as asserting the negative behavior. It has been almost two weeks and I am not sure if I should stop at the end of the 2 weeks or continue the tabs for another 2 weeks?

What would happen if after the additional 2 weeks, the behavior comes back?

Thanks

Dear Brooke:

Thank you for your inquiry to Pro Pet. If you are seeing improvement after the intial two week administration of our Stool Eating Preventative, it would be recommended to double the dosage for an additional 3-4 weeks. Give all the tablets together at the same time, once daily. The product will change the taste of the stool to make it unpalatable and generally, once the dog draws the connection that stool eating is no longer enjoyable, the cycle is broken. If we can be of any further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Dear Peter:

Thank you for contacting Pro Pet. Generally, the most commonly reported side effect with over-ingestion of this product would be some intestinal upset such as soft stool or diarrhea. What type of dog do you have and how is he/she doing today?

Dear Viola:

Thank you for contacting Pro Pet. This product needs to be given to the pet whose stool is being consumed so you need to give this to your bichon to deter the min pin from eating that dog's stool. We hope this is helpful and if we can be of any further assistance, feel free to contact us.

Question
We just found our Dachsund with an open/consumed bottle of Stool-Eating Preventative. What should we do?
She's almost 2 1/2 years old, weighs about 15 lbs. We believe she consumed 55-59 pills. We read your answer to someone else, and was expecting stomach discomfort...and a little while she vomited pretty thoroughly - and was also expelling soft stool at the same time. We have given her water and are watching her closely. Are there any other issues we should be watching for, to know we need to get medical attention?

Question
Can I use the stool-eating preventative on my cats?
My puppy really enjoys taking little "treats" out of the cats' litterbox. If I give the stool-eating preventative to my cats will it harm them?

Dear Linny:

Thanks for contacting Pro Pet. This product needs to be administered to the pet whose stool is being consumed so if your puppy gets into the litter box then yes, you need to treat your cat and this is not harmful and perfectly safe to administer to cats. You would follow the same dosage recommendations. If we can help with anything further, feel free to contact us.

Question
Pro-pet Stool-Eating Preventative
Our 8 month old Shih Tzu has been on the above for 1 month (2 weeks on 1 tablet and 2 weeks on 2 tablets) but is still eating her stool if given the opportunity. I read where if there is some improvement it is okay to keep her on 2 tablets a day for an additional 1 or 2 weeks.

At what point do we give up and try something else?

Oftentimes we see this behavior in puppies and usually they grow out of it. Meanwhile, be sure to clean up all signs of stool. Continue to use the Stool Eating Preventative tablets.

I would also add a small amount of MSG to the food; this has the effect of making the stool taste bad (sounds kind of funny, I know).

You might consider a "sting" operation: Leave a small amount of stool out, and spray it with a cayenne pepper solution, or tabasco, or bitter spray. When he eats it, he will recoil and begin to feel an aversion, based on this negative experience.

To make the point more forcefully, you can first spray some of the bitter or cayenne right into his mouth. This will not be pleasant. When he approaches the stool and smells the same scent on it, he will not be so tempted to eat it. Refresh the negative reinforcement by spraying his mouth with the bitter spray 1 to 2 times weekly, until the behavior stops.

Keeping him engaged in interactive and self directed play will also help keep his mind off his favorite dessert!

Thank you for contacting ProPet. I am hopeful that you contacted a Veterinarian or the Poison Control Center to be on the safe side. Particuliarly because your dog is a small breed. Please let us know how he is doing.

Thank you for contacting ProPet. You would give your dog the weight appropriate amount of pills daily for 2 weeks. At the beginning of the third week, if there is no change you would double the dosage for another two weeks.
